When it comes to outdoor lighting, the decision between spotlights and floodlights can make a big difference. Proper landscape lighting installation not only makes a difference in how your space looks but also how it functions. As a property owner, landscaper, or lighting designer, working with a reputable service provider ensures that your vision comes to life without breaking the bank. At Abulous Lighting, we leverage extensive expertise to provide quality solutions that align with your illumination needs. Let’s delve into the difference between lighting options to ensure you make informed decisions.

What Are Spotlights?

Spotlights are popular fixtures designed to produce a narrow beam of light that focuses on specific areas. Strategically installed spotlights act as precise tools, directing attention to a tree, statue, or even a textured wall. This also helps create focal points in your yard because of the controlled beam angle these lights offer. When it comes to landscape lighting installation, light and shadow work together, adding visual appeal and depth. In most situations, technicians recommend less lighting to create more impact.

What Are Flood Lights?

As the name suggests, flood lights produce a beam that covers a wide area. Unlike spotlights that highlight a specific object, these fixtures provide general illumination. This makes them ideal for spaces where visibility matters more than aesthetics or artistic effect. If you have a landscape lighting installation planned, adding flood lights to your outdoor spaces can help illuminate patios, driveways, and large yards with dark spots. Although flood lights don’t have the dramatic flair of spotlights, their practicality is undeniable.

Spotlights vs Flood Lights: What’s the Difference?

Now that you know the basics about these outdoor lighting options, familiarizing yourself with the main differences can inform your decisions. Let’s explore the key distinctions you should know before investing in landscape lighting.

Light Coverage and Intensity

As mentioned, flood lights are designed with a higher beam angle that allows for wider coverage. However, spotlights have less illumination coverage due to a lower angle and a concentrated beam that targets objects or specific areas for precise visibility. While flood lights have a lower intensity than spotlights, they spread evenly and eliminate dark spots on your property.

Design

Flood lights are bulkier due to their outdoor applications and wide coverage. Before mounting, the technician can adjust the fixture to achieve the ideal angle for maximum illumination. Once flood lights are securely mounted, they cannot be re-adjusted easily without the proper equipment and skills. On the other hand, spotlights are designed with compactness in mind, as they come in small sizes that can even fit in your pocket.

Energy Consumption

Flood lights cover a vast area, which means that they use more energy to achieve the desired illumination. Moreover, these fixtures are designed to expel large amounts of heat when turned on for a long time. In contrast, spotlights use significantly less energy due to targeted outdoor lighting. Unlike flood lights, they focus light on specific objects and areas, saving energy and money in the long run.

Cost

Cost is a crucial factor when it comes to landscape lighting installation. If you have a remodel planned or are looking to give your yard a facelift, ensuring you get your money’s worth is essential. Spotlights are more expensive due to their high precision and adjustability, which makes them ideal for different outdoor lighting needs. If you are on a budget, flood lights offer a simple design that covers a great area without breaking the bank.

In reality, there’s no single answer when choosing between flood lights and spotlights. Each outdoor lighting solution serves a different purpose, and the ideal choice depends on your goals. Absolute Lighting installed my outdoor flood lights 2 years ago and they are beautiful! They did such a great job that I used them to setup and take down the Christmas lights for the past 2 years. I would highly recommend them. Frank always responds to questions and automatically puts me on the schedule for set up and take down of the Christmas Lights.

Frank and the team at Abulous were great to work with. They came out and retro-upgraded some previous lighting that we had done a few years back and made it look as seamless and continuous as possible. They also worked with us on the best (& most economical) way to light up a hard to reach area of our yard. They also followed up with us after we had another group of workers "disturb" some of the lighting wires and came back out and fixed everything back up again. Very friendly, dependable local resource who do great work. Highly recommend.

After reviewing multiple companies we contracted with Abilous Lighting to create outside accent lighting for our home, backyard patio, walkways, & fire pit.  Their ideas and design were the best!   It was a pleasure working with Frank Hasty, who did  the design, and his crew of Brandon & Rusty who performed the work.  All were excellent to work with.   We are very happy with Abulous Lighting.
